Sampige Srinivasa Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Srinivasa. Sampige is a village in the Turuvekere Taluk of Tumkur district of Karnataka. This village has got its root in the ancient times when it was known as the Champakapuri due to the profound sacred Champaka Trees here. Sampige is known for the temple of Lord Srinivasa who is also called as Sampige Srinivasa or Sri Srinivasa Perumal. This Deity is the kula devata of many Hebbar Iyengars.
The Origin of Sri Sampige Srinivasa in Sampige
The Deity of Sri Srinivasa in this ancient temple dates to Dwapara-yuga. This place derives its name from the Champaka trees which were sighted in abundance, millenniums ago in this place. The Deity of Sampige Srinivasa was worshipped by King Sudhanva who once ruled the capital. The place was under ruins post King Sudhanva’s rule. The Deity had to be hid in an ant hill – Valmika. Narada Muni accompanied by the Gandharvas would worship this Deity every night.
Once a villager noticed a bright aura in the ant hill. The inquisitive villager found the hidden Deity in the ant hill and informed the authorities. A gorgeous temple was built for an elaborate worship of Sri Srinivasa. The extremely beautiful and the majestic Deity Sri Srinivasa adorns Shankha – Conch Shell, Chakra – the Disc weapon, Gada – the club and He is in the Divine form of Sharanagati Hastha – the Lord’s hand indicating to surrender.
The annual Brahmotsava festival of Sampige Srinivasa is celebrated around the month of May with great pomp and fervour commemorating the pratishsthapana of Sri Srinivasa Deity at this place. The Brahma Rathotsava is observed on the Vaishaka Shukla Trayodashi Chitra Nakshatram. The villagers have a cultural procession – jaatre and get a unique opportunity to display their hidden talents for the pleasure of Sri Srinivasa. It’s not only the localites who participate in the annual fete, but also devotees from far off places visit this temple to offer their prayers and respects to the Lord. The energised devotees along with the festivities make this event an event to behold.
