Wadapally, home to Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, is the first of the Pancha Narasimha kshetras scattered around Dravida Desam (Telangana & Andhra Pradesh). Wadapally is located at the confluence of the sacred Krishna river and Musi river in the Nalgonda district of Telangana.
The Deities were not carved on earth; rather brought down to earth by Sage Agastya. Devotees can observe the breathing of Lord Narasimha here by observing the lamp placed near His lotus face.
History of Wadapally Lakshmi Narasimha Temple
Just like the other Pancha Narasimha kshetras, the temple of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy in Wadapally has its own unique history.
Once Sage Agastya was travelling through outer space carrying the Deities of Lord Shiva and Lord Narasimha. As the Sage landed on earth and was proceeding towards Kashi, he heard a celestial voice saying that Lord Narasimha desires to be consecrated at a place where the Krishna river and Musi river meets.
Acting on the guidance of the celestial voice, Sage Agastya consecrated the Deity of Lord Narasimha in current day Wadapally at the confluence of the Krishna river and Musi river. A temple was built at the place and Deity worship established.
The Shivalinga which Sage Agastya brought along with the Deity of Lord Narasimha was consecrated nearby and currently known as the Meenakshi Agastheshwara Temple.
Wadapally Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple re-established
As years passed by, the temple was neglected. Hence, the Deity of Lord Narasimha was covered by an ant hill. In the 12th century i.e. 1377 CE, the Reddy kings found the Deity of Lord Narasimha while excavating the ground for the construction of their city. They rebuilt the temple and re-established the worship of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy at Wadapally.
The worship of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy has been going on in the temple since then.
Deities of Wadapally Lakshmi Narasimha Temple
The celestial Deity of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy is gorgeous in appearance. Lakshmi Devi is seated on the lotus lap of Sri Narasimha Swamy. There are two lamps placed in the sanctum which are Akhanda Deepams i.e. lamps which have been burning continuously for a very long time.
You can observe the lamp placed at the level of the Lord’s lotus face to be flickering while the one placed below burns perfectly still. This has been connected to the breathing of the Deity. It is said that the breathing of Lord Narasimha in this temple can be observed by observing the lamp placed at the level of Lord Narasimha’s lotus face.
The Utsavar i.e. festival Deities of their Lordships can be seen right in front of the sanctum. The huge Deities of Jaya and Vijaya guard the sanctum of their Lordships standing on either side of the entrance. Lord Hanuman too resides in the temple. Garudadev can be observed on the dwajastambha i.e. flag-pole.
You can see the Deities of the 12 Azhwars of the Sri sampradaya in the temple complex.
Architecture of Wadapally Lakshmi Narasimha Temple
The temple has a simple architecture in the Dravidian style with a wide-spaced prakaram to perform pradakshina i.e. circumambulation. Along the prakaram lies the Utsava-mantapa where the abhishekam to Utsavar Deities are performed.
The yajnashala is near to this mantapa. There are few carvings on the outer temple while the mukha-mantapa has a few carved stone pillars. A dwajastambha i.e. flag-pole stands at the entrance of the temple with Garuda on the top.
