Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2015 was celebrated in all the major temples of South India on Dec 21, 2015 (Mon). Millions of devotees were blessed by the Supreme Lord Himself to reach Vaikuntha, His own abode.
Vaikuntha Ekadashi is celebrated in Vaishnava temples all over South India. It is one of the major festivals celebrated with grandeur amidst the holy chants of the Lord’s names. A great Vaishnava Sri Nammalvar was very dear to the Supreme Lord Vishnu. On the day he left his body on this Earth, the Supreme Lord Himself personally stood on the doors of Vaikuntha with His arms open, to receive Him. To commemorate this loving pastime of the Lord, Vaikuntha Ekadashi is celebrated in the temples. Another reason behind this festival is that everyday morning devatas visit Vaikuntha to have darshan of Lord Vishnu. One day of demigods is equivalent to one earthly year. Hence every year, Vaikuntha dwara is erected in the temples. Devotees who pass through the Vaikuntha Dwara on this day, go straight to Vaikuntha after death.
